What a Used Car Actually Costs to Run in Dubai

Most people work out whether they can afford a used car by looking at the price on Dubizzle. The price is the part you pay once. Everything in this article is the part you pay every year, and on a cheap car it can add up to more than the purchase price over three years of ownership.

None of this is exotic knowledge. It is just rarely written down in one place, which is why buyers who have moved here recently get surprised by it.

Salik, and why your commute now has a price list

Salik is Dubai's road toll. There are no barriers, no stopping and no way to opt out: a tag on the windscreen is charged automatically every time you pass under a gate. What changed is that the charge is no longer flat.

Under the variable pricing in force in 2026, on Monday to Saturday:

On Sundays, crossings are charged at AED 4 plus VAT throughout the charged hours, with the same free window from 1 AM to 6 AM. Ramadan runs to a different timetable. Since 1 June 2026, five per cent VAT applies to toll transactions, so the headline numbers are not quite the numbers that leave your account.

The reason this matters when you are choosing a car is that it is not really a car cost at all, it is a route cost, and it is entirely predictable before you buy. Count the gates on your daily commute, multiply by two for the return trip, multiply by the working days in a month, and you have a number. A commute crossing three gates each way in peak hours is roughly AED 250 a month before VAT. That is a meaningful part of a car budget, and it does not change whether you drive a ten year old Corolla or a new Patrol.

Two practical notes. Salik charges follow the vehicle, so when you buy a used car, check that the seller has cleared their balance and dealt with their tag rather than leaving it on the windscreen. And a car being sold cheaply by somebody who "never uses the tolls" may simply have been driven very differently from how you will drive it.

Registration renewal

Registration has to be renewed every year, and renewal requires the car to pass its technical test first.

In Dubai, renewal typically lands somewhere around AED 350 to AED 570 depending on plate category, and for most private cars it is done online in minutes once the test is passed. Fees differ by emirate, so if you are registering in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi, check that authority's own schedule rather than assuming Dubai's numbers.

Budget for the renewal as an annual event and, on an older car, budget for the possibility that it fails the test and needs work to pass it. Worn tyres, a cracked windscreen, dead bulbs and modifications are the usual culprits, and they are all things a pre-purchase inspection sees.

Insurance, which is where age hurts

Insurance is the running cost that varies most between buyers, because it is priced on the car and on you: the value of the vehicle, its age, the engine, your age, your licence history and your claims record all move the number.

The specific things worth knowing before you commit to a particular used car:

• Comprehensive cover gets harder as the car ages. Many insurers restrict or decline comprehensive cover on older vehicles and will offer third party only, which changes your exposure completely if the car is written off.
• Agency repair is usually off the table on an older car, so repairs go to non-agency garages and the parts used may not be original.
• Get a real quote before you buy, not after. Insurers will quote on a specific chassis number in minutes. A car that looks affordable can turn out to carry a premium that changes the decision, and you want to find that out while you can still walk away.

What the heat does to your maintenance bill

This is the part that catches out buyers who learned to drive somewhere temperate. The UAE climate ages specific components far faster than mileage alone suggests.

• Batteries. Life expectancy here is commonly two to three years rather than the five you might expect elsewhere. A battery that is three summers old is a replacement waiting to happen.
• Air conditioning. Not a comfort item in this country. AC work is routine, not exceptional, and a weak system on a test drive in September is a system that will be worse next July.
• Tyres. They age out on date as well as on tread depth, and heat accelerates it. A car with plenty of tread on five year old tyres needs tyres.
• Cooling system, belts and rubber. Hoses, seals and belts harden and crack faster. Most of the expensive engine failures that follow are downstream of something cheap that perished.
• Paint and interior trim. Sun damage is cosmetic but it is real money at resale.

A car that has been garaged and serviced on schedule can be in a completely different condition from one of the same year and mileage that lived outdoors in Deira. Nothing on the advert tells you which one you are looking at.

Depreciation, the cost nobody invoices you for

You never write a cheque for depreciation, which is why it gets ignored, and on a newer car it is usually the single largest cost of ownership.

The practical version for a used-car buyer: the steepest fall has already happened on a car that is three or four years old, which is why that age bracket is usually the sensible buy. Beyond that, the curve flattens, and what you lose in value starts to be replaced by what you spend in maintenance. Cars with strong local demand hold value noticeably better than cars nobody wants in this market, and the gap is bigger here than the purchase prices suggest.

Before you commit to a specific used car, work out four numbers for that exact vehicle rather than for cars in general:

2. Registration renewal for the emirate you will register in.
3. A real insurance quote for that chassis number, in your name.
4. The near-term maintenance the car's age and condition make likely: battery, tyres, brakes, belts, AC service.

The fourth number is the one that is guesswork unless somebody has actually looked at the car. That is precisely what a pre-purchase inspection produces: a list of what needs doing now and what needs doing soon, which is the difference between a budget and a hope.
